NTI’s Draft Policy Supporting Uranium Mining

The uranium industry found sympathetic ears in the Lands departments of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, which released a draft uranium mining policy in 2006. The draft policy was very supportive of uranium mining. It gave several reasons for this support, which are summarized below:

Uranium mining would, the policy claimed, bring substantial economic benefits to Inuit, especially where Inuit own mineral rights.

By allowing uranium mining, Inuit would allegedly be helping stop climate change.

While uranium mining was environmentally destructive and harmful to human health in the past, advances in technology and new regulations apparently ensure that “modern” uranium mining is safe for the environment and human health.

International agreements and treaties ensure that uranium mined in Nunavut would not contribute to nuclear weapons.
